Boethius 4-week course (online)

Can philosophy offer consolation in life? Can it teach us how best to face life’s vicissitudes?

Boethius’ classic work The Consolation of Philosophy, with its moving tale of his false imprisonment, explores timeless questions concerning fate, free-will, and how the study of philosophy provides comfort amid the troubles of earthly existence.

The work has been translated many times, including by Alfred the Great, Chaucer and Elizabeth I, and was once thought to offer an indispensable model for living. This session will provide an introduction to Boethius’ work and to other such texts that aim to teach the science and art of philosophical detachment.

Facilitator: Julie Parker
