Sophrology and the Silva Method with Philip Carr-Gomm (3 Sessions)
Consciousness in Harmony and Creative Action: an Exploration of Sophrology and the Silva Method
Over three workshops, we will explore two systems for personal and spiritual development that have proved highly popular over the last 50 years: Sophrology in the French-speaking world and the Silva Method in the USA.
Starting in the 1960’s, the creators of these systems drew on a wide range of influences to create a technique that would enable their students to access deeper levels of consciousness. The techniques in each system are different, and yet similar enough for us to make comparisons to determine which we prefer. Both systems are designed to enhance feelings of wellbeing, to encourage healing, and to foster the achievement of specific goals, and for this reason both systems use the descriptor ‘dynamic’: Sophrology teaches ‘Dynamic Relaxation’, the Silva Method ‘Dynamic Meditation’.
In the first workshop, Philip will offer you a history and overview of the central ideas and applications of Sophrology, and you will be able to experience its key method for accessing a deeper level of awareness. In the second workshop, we will work in the same way with the Silva Method. Then in the third workshop, we will compare and contrast both systems, and come to our own conclusions about the value of each, and how we might want to make use of their techniques, singly or in combination.
