Dreaming the World: Astrology as Integrative Vision
The practice of western astrology arose out of the cosmologies of the ancient world: Babylonian star divination alongside Greek and Egyptian astronomical and spiritual concepts, including the Neoplatonic and Hermetic vision of an animated cosmos. Fundamental to the Medieval and Renaissance worldview, astrology is rooted in the idea of symbolic correspondence in a universe which is both alive and interconnected, before the revolutions of Descartes, science and the Enlightenment established a very different cosmology.
In this talk we will explore some of western astrology’s long history, including ways in which it has been conceived, practised and, more latterly, subjected to testing (often with curious results). In particular, we will think about what astrology might offer to our disenchanted contemporary world, as an integrative art centred around the natural rhythms of cyclical time and the perceptions of mythic and symbolic imagination.

Speaker Carole Taylor is a practising astrologer. She holds an MA in Myth, Cosmology and the Sacred from Canterbury Christ Church University and taught for several years on the MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David.
