Hildegard of Bingen

Hildegard of Bingen (d. 1179) was a nun, a visionary, a writer on religion and medicine, a composer and a poet. She mobilised this diverse array of learning, writing, and communication – all in Latin – towards encouraging spiritual excellence, as well as reform in the Church. She was remarkable in her rage, and indomitable in her personality, often harsh in her treatment of those in her care and those who led the Church.

Studying Hildegard of Bingen raises interesting questions. She achieved a great deal, even as a woman who had no access to higher education establishments. She was highly conservative and yet an innovator in religious thought and imagery. She preached in public to eminent churchmen. She wrote and supervised the illumination of her manuscripts. There is a great deal of interest to share in what promises to be a fascinating presentation.
