The Mithraic Equinox: Cautopates and the Downward Facing Torch
We welcome the return of Frances Eley for this talk on the worship of Mithras. The talk will explore the iconography of the torch bearers associated with the worship of Mithras, in particular, that of Cautopates and his association with Autumn, sunset, the dying year and the triumph of the dark (Death).
Frances will investigate the symbol of the inverted torch in Roman (and other) funerary contexts and the place of the Divine Torchbearers in the Mithraic Wheel of the Year.

Frances Eley is a Lecturer in Classics with the Open University. She has a long-standing and whole-hearted engagement with the myths and mysteries belonging to various cultures: Greek, Celtic and Hindu.
Cost: £20 to include tea/coffee and cake following the talk.
This is an afternoon event at Fintry – you are welcome to stay and explore the grounds or use the Library until 17.00.
