The Dream of Scipio and the Harmony of the Spheres

The Dream of Scipio, the final part of Cicero’s partially lost work The Republic, was preserved in an extended commentary by the fourth century philosopher Macrobius. Not only did Macrobius preserve what might otherwise have been lost, his commentary on Scipio’s Dream narrative became for medieval thinkers something of a treasury of ideas and theories about the earth, the heavens and the human soul.

This 4-session course will offer an introduction to The Dream of Scipio itself for those who are not familiar with it and highlight the Dream’s intended parallel with the Myth of Er, the final section of Plato’s Republic. We will then look at some of what Macrobius, in the course of explaining the Dream, bequeathed to later ages: the harmony of the spheres, dream theory, the political virtues and the immortality of the soul.
