The Consolation of Philosophy
Can philosophy offer consolation in life? Can it teach us how best to face life’s vicissitudes?
Boethius’ classic work The Consolation of Philosophy, with its moving tale of false imprisonment, explores timeless questions concerning fortune, free-will, the nature of Creation, and how a return to a higher philosophical viewpoint provides comfort amid the troubles of earthly existence, and leads to a vision of divine providential overshadowing.
For over a thousand years the work was thought to offer an indispensable model for living, and was translated many times, including by Alfred the Great for the edification of his subjects, by Chaucer and by Elizabeth I. This study day will provide an introduction to Boethius’ work with its aim to teach the science and art of philosophical detachment.
