Stepping out of the River: Time Expansion Experiences and the Illusion of Linear Time with Dr Steve Taylor

Have you ever had a car accident or a fall in which seconds seemed to expand into minutes? Perhaps you’ve experienced a radical slowing of time during meditation, while playing sport, or during a near-death experience. Dr. Steve Taylor has spent many years collecting and analyzing reports of such ‘time expansion’ and ‘time cessation’ experiences.

In this session – based on his new book Time Expansion Experiences: The Psychology of Time Perception and the Illusion of Linear Time – Steve will explain how and why such experiences arise in altered states of consciousness, and what they may tell us about the nature of human consciousness, and of reality itself. Steve will suggest that, in the spiritual dimension beyond our normal awareness, time is spatial and panoramic. The past still exists, while the future already exists, in parallel with the present. Steve will also discuss whether it’s possible to consciously induce time expansion, and will lead a meditation on this theme. He will also include meditations and poems to illustrate the reality and the power of connection.

Steve Taylor PhD is the author of many best-selling books on psychology and spirituality including The Adventure, Extraordinary Awakenings, and The Leap. His books have been published in more than 20 languages, and Eckhart Tolle has described his work as ‘an important contribution to the shift in consciousness which is happening on our planet at present.’ Since 2012, he has appeared annually in Mind, Body, Spirit magazine’s list of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People. He is a senior lecturer and researcher in psychology at Leeds Beckett University.
